Starting a fitness journey can be daunting, but when passion meets dedication, it creates something truly special. Carla Gilder Fitness (CGF) is a shining example of how a small local initiative can grow into a vibrant community that supports and inspires its members every day. This story is not just about fitness classes or studios; it’s about people, resilience, and the power of connection.

The Early Days: A Passion for Fitness and Community
Carla Gilder Fitness began in 2002 with Carla herself leading the way. At that time, Carla offered fun fitness classes in a local scout hut in Bollington. The sessions included circuit training, boxercise, pump and personal training. These early classes were more than workouts; they were opportunities for people to come together, enjoy movement, and build friendships.
The turning point came when Carla introduced Zumba classes. The energy and excitement around Zumba quickly attracted more people, and the community started to grow. This was the moment CGF as it is known today truly began to take shape.
Growing the Team and Expanding the Offerings
As the community expanded, Carla welcomed her first instructors: Kim, Fran, and Shelley her sister. These women started as members who shared a passion for fitness and the CGF community. Their enthusiasm and commitment helped CGF evolve from a handful of classes to over 20 classes a week, all available through a membership model.
The team’s growth mirrored the community’s growth. More instructors joined, and CGF became a place where people could find a variety of classes to suit their interests and fitness levels. This diversity helped CGF stand out and attract a wide range of members.
Opening CGF Studios Macclesfield
In 2017, CGF reached a major milestone by opening the doors to CGF Studios in Macclesfield. This new space included a personal training studio and a group exercise studio, providing a dedicated environment for members to train and connect.
The studio became a hub for the community, offering a welcoming space where people could pursue their fitness goals with expert guidance. It also allowed CGF to expand its offerings beyond classes to include fitness holidays in the UK and Portugal, an activewear brand called CGActivewear, and unique fitness events. These events ranged from Zumba in a nightclub to fitness festivals and yoga brunch, creating fun and engaging ways for members to stay active and connected.
Navigating Challenges and Staying Strong
The pandemic in 2020 brought unexpected challenges. CGF quickly adapted by moving classes online, initially finding success with on-demand services launched in 2019. This platform allowed members to maintain their CGF lifestyle from day one of lockdown, before transitioning to live Zoom classes.
The journey back to in-person classes was gradual, moving from outdoor sessions to indoor studios. It took time to regain the momentum, but the community’s support never wavered.
During this period, Carla and the team faced personal hardships: Carla went through a difficult breakup and divorce, Louise tragically lost her daughter Mia, Fran lost her mother, Shelley separated from her partner, and Kim experienced the challenges of midlife hormones. Despite these struggles, the CGF community, brand, and service provided strength and motivation to keep moving forward.
Looking Ahead: Focus on Growth, Diversity, and Inclusion
2025 marked a turning point with the first strong year back to normal operations. The momentum built during this time is carrying CGF confidently into 2026. The focus now is on growth, diversity, and inclusion, ensuring that CGF remains a welcoming and supportive space for everyone.
The vision includes expanding class offerings, welcoming new instructors and members, and continuing to create events and experiences that bring people together. CGF aims to be more than a fitness brand; it strives to be a community where everyone feels valued and empowered.
